Wycombe shocks fans with surprise signing of Danny Ings

Wycombe Wanderers have shocked fans with the surprise signing of Danny Ings despite EFL and FA approval.

The 34-year-old became a free agent after leaving Sheffield United in the summer and signed with the Chairman until the end of the 2026/27 season.

Mark McAdam also confirmed that he has been training in the First Division over the past few days and that the club impressed him enough to make him an offer to sign.

The club said in a statement website:

Former England international Danny Ings has joined Wycombe Wanderers and is likely to feature in Saturday’s League One clash with Reading at Adams Park.

The 34-year-old forward, who became a free agent after leaving Sheffield United in the summer, arrives at Wycombe with a wealth of experience, including 240 top-flight appearances with Burnley as well as Southampton, West Ham United, Aston Villa and Liverpool with chairman coach Sam Woakes.

He has scored more than 120 career goals, including one for England in a friendly against Wales in 2020, and has trained with the chiefs over the past week before signing a deal this morning.

His transfer was announced live on Sky Sports News, but is subject to approval from the EFL and FA, and he will wear the number 28 shirt.

“Danny is an attacking player of top quality and has a wealth of experience in the game. We are confident that Danny can help the team on and off the pitch.

“He joined the squad on Friday last week and has been training with the squad since, so we know he’s fit and sharp and ready to make an impact immediately.”

Interviewer: Danny, a warm welcome to Wycombe. How does it feel to be a homeless person?

Danny: Yeah, it’s been a real pleasure, it’s been a really good week training with the team, getting to know everyone and yeah, it’s been really exciting to get the job done today.

Interviewer: There was some speculation this summer about the possibility of such a move, but how long has it actually been around?

Danny: So I came in, I think it was in July, met everyone, saw the club, saw how well it was run, saw everything behind the team and it was a really good set-up and yeah, here we are now, a few months later, ready to go.

Interviewer: So what prompted you to make such a move now?

Danny: I think for me, I’m at the point in my career right now. There are many different factors. Obviously you want to play football for as long as possible and positioning is key too. I have a little boy who wanted to be around a lot and that was a big factor but also to feel like a team and I did that this week and I really enjoyed my time there and yeah that helped me make my decision.

Interviewer: The season has started. What are your first impressions of how the team has been put together so far?

Danny: Yeah, obviously winning the last two games you know it’s important, it’s always difficult when the manager leaves and keeping the momentum going, it’s really exciting to do that and yeah, there’s a lot of games to look forward to and hopefully that will continue as well.
