Man United news: Sharpe backs Carrick, calls for signings

Former Manchester United star Lee Sharpe has insisted that sacking Michael Carrick and bringing in a new manager makes little sense.

Carrick did well as Man Utd’s caretaker manager last season, but results and performances have dipped slightly since he was appointed as the club’s new permanent manager.

The Red Devils are currently 12th in the Premier League table, having won just one of their opening five league matches, while Carrick’s side were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Brighton.

Discussing the situation at United, Sharp made it clear that another change in the dugout could make things even more difficult for the club as they would have to go through another rebuilding process.

Instead, Sharpe wants to see MUFC give Carrick more time and, crucially, more signings to work on after not doing enough during the summer transfer window.

Manchester United should keep Carrick and sign him more

“It’s too early to sack him. You’re just going to start again with another manager who wants different players. I don’t see the point in doing that now,” Sharpe told TEAMtalk.

“The board have to take some responsibility. Tielemans was good value and Baleba looks like a decent buy, but I think Carrick, the supporters and everyone around the club would have expected one, two or maybe three more signings.

“I mean, the players started slow and sloppy and that needs to change. They need to play at a higher tempo and move the ball faster.”

While some are starting to lose patience with Carrick, most United fans will still agree with this sentiment.

The 45-year-old looked like a really smart date after his strong interim spell, so it seems premature to seriously consider getting rid of him now.

Still, standards and expectations are high at United, so Carrick will likely realize he needs to turn things around quickly or these talks are likely to continue.
