Man City Star (Under £30m To Sign) Rated Premier League’s Best

Former Nottingham Forest and Wales star Mark Crossley says Man City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma is the best goalkeeper in the Premier League “for one simple reason”.

The Italy international was signed from Paris Saint-Germain last year for just £26m, but Crossley claims Donnarumma is the best of the current crop due to his shot-stopping ability:

“Donnarumma. Simple reason, because I’ve always been told what’s your job as a goalkeeper? And ultimately, your job as a goalkeeper is to stop the ball going into the goal.”

“Before, it was probably the other way around. 75 percent with your hands and 25 percent with your feet. That’s how I look at it.”

“I think at the end of the day, your job is to stop the ball from going into the goal. It’s old fashioned or not, but that’s your job. I think he’s the best at it.”

The numbers back up Crossley’s point

Opta rates every Premier League goalkeeper, comparing their xG to the actual number of goals conceded.

After 5 games, Donnarumma is second best behind Newcastle United’s Lukas Hornicek.

The 27-year-old has conceded 2.6 fewer goals per xG than the likes of Arsenal’s David Ray. The winner of “Golden Gloves” conceded only 0.1 less goals than against xG.

Donnarumma will be needed when Man City face Liverpool

Enfield is never an easy place to go and Enzo Maresca’s side will have to call on their goalkeeper to get them out of trouble on Sunday night.

Donnarumma was an enemy for Liverpool when they faced them in the Champions League for PSG and will look to provide more heroics if required this weekend.
