After seeing fellow midfielders Dominic Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch sign new contracts at Liverpool, Alexis Mike Allister claims he is “very sad” he was not offered a contract extension in the summer.
To his credit, the Argentine didn’t let the rhetoric affect his performances as he scored two stunning goals against Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League and Carabao Cup respectively.
Perhaps the summer snub has fueled the World Cup winner’s fortunes, with the 27-year-old arguably one of many players to have endured a slump over the past 12 months or so.
The question now is whether he can play again under Andoni Iraola, or whether the playmaker is simply headed for an inevitable exit early on.
Will Mike Allister sign new contract at Liverpool?
To be fair, incoming sporting director Julian Ward is likely to have a lot of room in Liverpool’s books when the deal is officially confirmed, given the complications he inherited from Richard Hughes.
Despite significant spending over the past year or so, this remains a relatively unbalanced, hodgepodge squad that could be further weakened by a string of departures next summer.
The likes of Joe Gomez, Wataru Endo, Kostas Tsimikas, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson are all currently out of contract in June, with key decisions being made regarding the latter group in particular.
Meanwhile, Mac Allister is one of those with just two years left on his contract, along with Federico Chiesa and Harvey Elliott, with the former Brighton and Hove Albion man having not signed new terms since signing in 2023.
By his own admission, Liverpool’s No.10 had “the option to leave” during the recent summer transfer window and has long been linked with a move to Real Madrid.
The Reds have lost a string of free agents recently, notably Ibrahima Konate and Trent Alexander-Arnold both leaving the Bernabeu, and Mike Allister is also likely to have his contract terminated.
However, after expressing his frustration so publicly, it does feel as though a decision needs to be made sooner rather than later, and the fact that Liverpool have yet to offer a contract extension perhaps says it all.
In fact, FSG already appear to be on the lookout for a potential midfield replacement.
How Liverpool can replace Mike Allister in 2027
The addition of Jeremy Jacquet has alleviated Liverpool’s concerns about the central defender. The first priority entering 2027 may be to strengthen the full-backs and midfielders.

Reports emerged this week that FSG could swoop in for Crystal Palace in January to sign experienced left-back Tyrick Mitchell to provide competition for Milos Kerkez.
As for the midfield search, talks have already taken place with Monaco’s Lamine Kamara, although the Senegalese star does not appear to be the only option on the agenda.
According to TEAMtalk , Illara and Co. are also among the clubs preparing to move for Lyon starlet Taylor Morton, with the 23-year-old attracting interest from as many as seven Premier League clubs.
Of course, the Englishman has previously played at Anfield and was sold for around £15m last summer, although the club have been keeping a close eye on his progress.
New manager Illaura is also said to be an “admirer”, although it remains to be seen whether the Reds will solidify their interest with a formal offer, with a host of midfield targets on the table.
If a deal for Morton goes through, it would certainly have its merits, and not just because of his previous links with the Merseysiders.
The young Englishman has been a real success story in France so far, starting 29 games in Ligue 1 last season while also playing more minutes than any of his team-mates so far in 2026/27.
As a defensive midfielder, Morton still contributed 4 goals and 1 assist in Ligue 1 last season, averaging one key pass per game with a passing accuracy rate of 88%.
This record is not too different from Mike Allister’s record in the Premier League in the 2025/26 season. The South American scored and assisted 6 goals, averaged one key pass per game and had a passing accuracy of 87%.
Morton does have an edge on the ball, however, outperforming his former teammate in tackles and interceptions per game (2.5 to 2.0) and tackles per game (4.4 to 3.0). Likewise, while Mike Allister averages over 1.1 dribbles per game, the youngster only averages 0.4 dribbles per game.
It is obvious that Morton was a versatile player and it is a testament to his character and courage that he succeeded so quickly in France.
He was also part of the England youth set-up and while playing for the Under-21s, Joe Hart praised his “Steven Gerrard-esque” passing range, a comparison that will only get people talking at Anfield.
Perhaps letting him go on the cheap could be a mistake, but bringing Morton back as a potential replacement for Mike Allister could prove to be a masterstroke.
