Cole Palmer’s recent retirement from international duties has left England manager Thomas Tuchel deeply frustrated.
While the 24-year-old started the new season in fine form, scoring four goals in seven appearances for Chelsea, his momentum was disrupted by a recurring muscle problem that forced him to withdraw from the Three Lions’ National League squad.

England manager Thomas Tuchel expressed clear frustration at the exit and stressed that Palmer’s ongoing injury setbacks have prevented him from cementing a starting spot in the national team.

“It’s definitely a missed opportunity [for Palmer]. This is another missed opportunity. He missed so many opportunities and I don’t blame him for that. This is just a fact. He missed so much training camp with injury, and I just want to rely on what I’ve witnessed personally and what I’ve seen with the team, and for that you have to be in training camp.
“If you’re not in training camp, you can’t reach that next level of impressiveness because you can only do that when you’re actually on the field with me, on the field with us, so, yeah, it’s a missed opportunity.
“My understanding is that he was playing in discomfort and pain and he couldn’t compete at the highest level in discomfort and pain, so he withdrew and informed us and Chelsea informed us. That’s my understanding.”
Despite the international setback, Chelsea remain confident their key men will be fully fit and lead their domestic campaign.

Speaking on recent transfer rumors linking the playmaker with Manchester United, Jones clarified that Palmer’s current focus remains completely undisturbed.
“However, sources have assured that Palmer remains fully committed to the England squad and is determined to establish himself as a key figure in the squad ahead of Euro 2028,” reports Jones.
“It is understood that despite recent speculation about his future, he is fully focused on Chelsea.”
Jones added: “Manchester United have been linked with a move for the 24-year-old this year and there has also been speculation that he may be unstable in London and prefer to return north. Those suggestions have not affected Palmer’s focus at the moment.”
“The player is determined to prove himself in every aspect this season, whether for Chelsea or for England. He has always maintained complete confidence in his ability and is focused on staying fit enough to consistently demonstrate his ability.”
