Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu has issued a statement explaining his decision not to feature for Ireland in tomorrow night’s game against Israel.
The 24-year-old, who plays for Championship side Bolton Wanderers at club level, did not believe he would be able to play in the game, despite his teammates voting for the game to go ahead following internal discussions within the squad.
Statement on Gavin Bazunu refusing to play against Israel
Bazunu said: “Representing my country means everything to me. I have the utmost respect for each of my team-mates, the manager, his staff and the people of Ireland.
“However, the decision I made was not taken lightly. I am a person of strong convictions and try my best to be a man of character and principles, so I feel it is a mistake to take part in the upcoming match against Israel.”
“My decision was based purely on my personal belief that killing innocent people is wrong.
“It’s important to note that my position is not against the people of Israel or the Jewish community, but against the atrocities in the region.
“There are very few opportunities in life to stand up for bigger things, and I truly believe this is one of them.”
Ireland to face Israel in Nations League
Ireland’s away game against Israel tomorrow will still go ahead as scheduled, but Bazunu’s boycott of the game is undoubtedly quite justified, and to be fair, it didn’t bring about the friendliest atmosphere before the game.
Israel communications director Shlomi Barzer has lashed out at Ireland coach Hymir Hallgrimson, accusing him of ignorance and hypocrisy but insisting he will not apologize for it.
There are also reports in the industry that irish independent News that Irish players may refuse to shake hands with Israeli players before the game.
