The FIFA World Cup 2026 The quarter-final line-up has now been completed after Argentina and Switzerland took the last two places in the last eight. After another dramatic knockout day, the South American giants fought back to beat Egypt 3-2, while Switzerland faced Colombia in a tense penalty shoot-out to continue their impressive tournament run.
Argentina crushes Egypt
Despite going two goals down, Argentina once again showed their fighting spirit to complete a remarkable comeback and secure their place in the quarter-finals.
The Pharaohs stunned the reigning world champions by taking the lead after just 15 minutes with Yaser Ibrahim’s powerful header.
Things got even more difficult for Lionel Scaloni’s side when Mostafa Zico doubled Egypt’s lead in the 67th minute. Egypt even thought they had a third goal moments ago, but VAR ruled it out for offside.
But Argentina refused to surrender. Cristian Romero pulled a goal back in the 79th minute to spark a comeback, before Lionel Messi restored parity with a faithful finish just four minutes later.
The winning goal came deep into stoppage time when Enzo Fernández completed the comeback. The goal sparked protests from the Egyptian players and coaching staff, who believed several fouls in the squad should have been reviewed by VAR.
Despite the controversy, the goal stood and Argentina secured a dramatic 3-2 victory and a place in the quarter-finals.
Switzerland beat Colombia on penalties
Meanwhile, after a goalless draw, Switzerland beat Colombia in a penalty shootout and secured their place in the last eight.
Both teams showed an attack-minded approach throughout the match, but struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against two disciplined defensive units.
Neither side could find a breakthrough in either normal time or the extra 30 minutes of extra time, sending the match to penalties.
In the end, Switzerland held their nerve, converting four of five penalties, while Colombia missed two attempts. Official shootout score for Rossocrociati 4-3.
As a result, Murat Akin’s team reached the 1/4 finals, where they will face Argentina in another eagerly awaited showdown.
