The US women’s national team tied Spain 2-2 on Tuesday night in Chester, Pennsylvania. It was a much-needed result for the USA after a tough 2-0 loss to Spain at the weekend.
What can we take away from this draw against the No. 1 team in the world? Let’s break it down.
1. There is no stone unturned in head coach Emma Hayes’ squad
After this match, it is clear that Hayes is still experimenting with the starting line-up and substitutions. From the first to the second match, Hayes made four changes to the starting line, changing each position group. Phallon Tullis-Joyce earned a start in goal, while Ashley Sanchez moved into the forward line and Claire Hutton and Gisele Thompson moved into midfield and backline respectively. Hayes made 8 substitutions in the second half of this match.
Some of those decisions may be due to player availability, as the United States has at least six players out due to injury.
