Cristiano Ronaldo has been provisionally suspended by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) for walking out of the national team last week following his row with coach Jorge Jesus.
“Following the decision of the Non-Professional Division dated October 9, 2026, a disciplinary case has been initiated against Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro,” the federation said in a statement.

The FPF said the matter was “urgent” and disciplinary proceedings had been opened against Ronaldo. The 41-year-old specialist has been suspended from football pending a decision on his final punishment.
Portugal’s next international games will be against Denmark and Wales in the UEFA Nations League group stage on November 14 and 17.

The disciplinary proceedings came after Ronaldo accused Jesus of breaking promises to play him twice during Portugal’s Nations League match against Norway.
According to Ronaldo, the two have agreed that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will sit out the matches against Norway and Denmark to manage his fitness. On the day of the Norway match, Ronaldo claims that Jesus told him he would play 30 minutes.

During the match, Ronaldo warmed up in the second half, but was never put into the game. Jesus later explained that the circumstances of the game – with Portugal winning 2-1 – made him change his mind about bringing on the forward.
This did not sit well with Ronaldo, who met with Jesus and claimed that the agreement between the parties did not come up at the manager’s next press conference.
After leaving Portugal’s camp, Ronaldo apologized to his teammates, said he would accept any punishment handed down by the FPF, insisted he was not stepping down from his national team duties and was hoping for “one or more” farewell matches.

“The Portuguese Football Federation must assess the consequences of my actions and punish me for it,” Ronaldo said in a statement on the social network. “I believe that the punishment should not be reduced. I am not an ordinary player; I am the captain of the team and this is an aggravating factor. I have already apologized, but I know that actions have consequences. Everyone in the world of football, like me, knows that the rules are the same for everyone, regardless of their individual situation.”
Ronaldo was already back in form when he scored his 980th career goal in Al-Nassr’s 3-0 win over Diriyah in the Saudi Arabian Pro League on Friday.
