While Chelsea secured an important win over Everton on Saturday, there was also some bad news.
Goalkeeper Amy Martinez had a horrific collision with a striker that resulted in surgery for a broken jaw. That meant youngster Mike Penders came on and will now keep his place for the foreseeable future, starting against Tottenham on Saturday.
Dom Smith wrote a piece for the Evening Standard looking at what Penders and fans can expect from the 21-year-old.
Penders and TSL are moving up the chain
As Penders moves from number two to number one, Teddy Sharman-Lowe moves from third choice to second. The academy goalkeeper has enjoyed several good loan spells in the lower leagues and is set to move to the Championship or Europe after this season.
The question is whether TSL will play games like the Liverpool match in the EFL Cup next week. If Martinez was still fit, would it be Penders’ matchup – now he goes to the next man, or does Alonso decide to keep the Belgian there to speed up the development of his relationship with the defence? We suspect it will be the latter.
In other news…
Xabi Alonso confirmed on Saturday that Pep Chavarria will undergo tests on the injury he picked up in training ahead of the game against Everton.
Former England defender Stuart Pearce was among the pundits impressed by Pender’s display on Saturday.
