The Clock Is Running On Browns Quarterback Decision

Personnel deadlines have a way of forcing decisions that teams want to delay. The front office can keep their options open for weeks, but once the calendar hits a certain date, they have to make a move one way or another. The Browns are approaching one of those moments in their quarterback room. Now the clock is ticking on one of their young roadies.

Tony Grossi revealed the Browns’ lineup when Dillon Gabriel returns from IR on Oct. 6.

“Browns have scheduled QB Dillon Gabriel to return from IR on Oct. 6. The 21-day practice window ends on Oct. 27. The Browns must activate Gabriel by that date or he will remain on IR for the rest of the season,” Grossi wrote.

That gives the Browns less than a week to make a decision. Dillon Gabriel opened the season on injured reserve with a back injury, but he’s been a full participant in practice since returning, so health doesn’t appear to be an obstacle.

The obstacle is space. Deshaun Watson was the starter, Shedeur Sanders the backup and rookie Tylen Green the emergency 3rd quarterback against the Baltimore Ravens. Activating Gabriel would give the Browns four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster.

Keeping four quarterbacks would be unusual, especially for a roster dealing with injuries at running back, defensive tackle and safety where every spot counts.

Placing Gabriel on injured reserve would keep him under contract through 2027 without being on the roster this season. It would also take a year of development for the 2025 3rd round pick as he starts a few games before taking over for Sanders.

Timing makes things difficult. The window closes on October 27, 2 weeks before the November 10 trade deadline. If the Browns activate Gabriel, they would have to clear a cap first, which could force them to select another quarterback sooner than planned.

The long-term picture is most important. Watson is in the final year of his contract and the Browns have 2 first round picks in 2027. How they handle Gabriel, Sanders and Green over the next few weeks will reveal how much they believe any of them can be a part of the future.

For now, Cleveland is focused on Sunday’s home game against the Tennessee Titans. In two days, the Browns will have to make a call that could shape their quarterback room this offseason.
