Patrick Schick continued a hot start to the Bundesliga season for Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday and is not looking forward to the upcoming international break.
Leverkusen moved up to fifth with a 2-0 win over RB Leipzig at the Bayern Arena, with Miguel Gutierrez putting in a fine performance for the hosts with a goal and an assist.
After a difficult start, Leverkusen took the lead in the 44th minute through Schick, with the Czech forward volleying past van der Walt from Gutierrez’s cross.
Gutierrez sealed the victory just an hour before the start of the game when his left-footed shot was caught by Vandervoort.
Leverkusen is undefeated in four consecutive games for the first time in the Bundesliga against Leipzig. They have won all the last three games and they deserve this victory.
Their expected goals against (xG) total from 18 shots was 2.27, four of which came from Schick, while Leipzig’s 12 shots had an xG of 0.97.
Schick has scored in the first four matchdays of the Bundesliga season for the first time, becoming the first Bayer Leverkusen player to do so since Stefan Kiesling in 2009-10.
His four-game winning streak also equals the 30-year-old’s personal record in the competition, which was previously set in August and September 2021, although he believes he can score more before the three-week international break when the season is halted.
“I could have scored two or three more goals,” Schick told DAZN.
“But overall we did a really good job. Unfortunately the international break is coming up.”

Leverkusen have scored at least twice in each of their first six games under Carles Martinez Novell, with the Spaniard becoming the first Werkself manager since Rudi Voller in 2000 to keep clean sheets in his first three home games in all competitions.
“Defensively, we did exactly what we planned,” added Leverkusen goalkeeper Mark Flecken.
“The counterattack was good, we drew a lot of fouls. Our defense was really good. It all came together.”
However, Leipzig’s away struggles continue as they have lost four consecutive away games in the Bundesliga. The only time they had a longer losing streak on the road was between April and August 2021 (five games).
They are ninth with six points, their worst start to the Bundesliga since 2022-23, when they took just five points from their first four league games.
Leipzig are still a work in progress under new manager Martin Demichelis, although captain David Laum says his side must be smarter if they are to succeed this season.
