A funeral was held today for Italy and Inter Milan legend Sandro Mazzola, with fans and representatives from numerous clubs attending a final farewell ceremony.
The iconic striker, who turned 83 last November, passed away on September 19.
The funeral was held in the Cathedral of Sant’Ambrogio Fans gathered outside this afternoon to pay their respects with flags and banners, and the coffin was draped in an Inter Milan shirt.
Representatives from a number of different clubs were in attendance, including Milan, Juventus and Torino.
Mazzola honored for club coming together
While some Juventus fans turned their backs on the controversy when they observed a minute’s silence for Mazzola yesterday, Bianconeri directors Giovanni Carnevalli and Riqui Massara received a round of applause from Inter fans when they arrived for the funeral today.

“Your name will remain in our history. Your memory will remain in the hearts of our fans. Goodbye Sandro,” one banner read.
Former players in attendance included Aristide Guarnieri, Giuseppe Bergomi, Francesco Toldo, Ivan Cordoba, Esteban Cambiaso and Gianfellis, the son of Inter Milan legend Giacinto Facchetti.
Like Milan’s Franco Baresi, Mazzola was a one-club player, spending his entire career with Inter Milan from 1960 until his retirement in 1977.
He was born into a real football family, his father was Valentino Mazzola, captain of the Torino team who died in a plane crash in the mountains of Superga in May 1949.
Sandro was only six years old at the time and barely remembered his legendary father.
Sandro and his trademark mustache went on to win four Serie A titles, two European Cups, two Intercontinental Cups and the 1968 European Cup with Italy.
