Frank Lampard admitted it was a “tough scoreline” after his Coventry side suffered a 5-0 defeat at Brighton this afternoon.
The Sky Blues started brightly in the opening half-hour but fell apart after Brighton scored on the break through Charalampos Kosturas and Malik Yarcuye.
Taiwo Awoniyi was sent off for an elbow in the face of Maxim De Cuyper and the home side had no response from 10 men as Brighton converted through Pascal Gross’ penalty and Lewis Dunkin and Yassin Ali’s penalties.
The defeat means Coventry are yet to score a point or goal in four games since promotion.
Lampard told BBC Match of the Day: “It was a difficult scoreline and it’s not easy at home. The first half was pretty good, we created some chances, better chances and we were under a lot of pressure. Then a mistake made it 2-0 and the red card made it very difficult.
“We have to take responsibility. We did some good things and then the game became very, very difficult for us. We have to keep working hard. [Manchester] Manchester City created some great chances last week [Gianluigi] Donnarumma made some great saves. The Premier League is a new pressure for these players. We have to keep working hard and hopefully when we start scoring goals, this team scored a lot last season but we have to keep working hard.
“In the end I can’t complain to the players.”
Huzelle looked clinical after Brighton finished fourth
The victory moved Brighton up to fourth in the Premier League table, but manager Fabian Huerzeller is not getting carried away.
He said: “It’s important to stay humble and not take these things for granted. Overall, we are a team with a lot of players who can score goals, which gives us a lot of flexibility, which is also good for the coach.”
Dunk’s goal became the highlight of the game, as the former England centre-back fired a stunning 25-yard shot into the top corner.
“I had this shot in my locker and I just took it and it went into the top corner. I was shocked myself but it was lovely,” he said on Sky Sports.
“We’ve shown fluidity and we’ve got some real quality on the pitch. If we keep scoring goals like this and keeping clean sheets, we’re going to have a great season.”
