Luis de la Fuente has assured his Spanish team “will not be complacent” after becoming world champions.
Spain beat Argentina in this summer’s competition to win their second World Cup title, with Ferran Torres scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win.
Spain are unbeaten in their last 38 games in all competitions (29 wins and 9 draws) ahead of the Nations League opener against England at Wembley Stadium, the longest unbeaten streak in the history of a European nation.
De La Fuente, who signed a new contract in recent weeks, insists his side can still improve as they chase more glory on the international stage.
“I guarantee that there will be no complacency,” the Spanish coach said.
“I know these players; they want to keep winning and making history. That’s the only way to achieve our goals.
“The drive to improve has to be constant and this team has that drive. This game will demand our absolute best.
“What we’ve done so far isn’t enough, but there’s huge room for improvement as a team.”

Spain has won six of its last nine meetings with England in all competitions (D1 D2), most recently winning 2-1 in the Euro 2024 final.
Their last away game against the Three Lions was also in the Nations League at Wembley in September 2018, which ended 2-1.
When asked why England, unlike Spain, have struggled in big matches, De La Fuente chose to talk about the threat posed by Thomas Tuchel’s side.
“I can only speak about what happened to us; I don’t know the inner workings of England,” De La Fuente added.
“They are a great team, finalists in the last two European Cups and World Cups. They are third in the FIFA rankings. They are a football superpower.”
“Spain always try to catch up in important games. The game at Wembley will be against a very difficult opponent.
“We are in a moment where we are confident and safe but any team can beat you, especially a team like England.”
