Xabi Alonso had a few players to praise after Saturday’s big win over Manchester United.

Morgan Rogers scored the decisive goal and Mike Penders made a crucial save. But in the end, Alonso directed his praise at Romeo Lavia, who was excellent in midfield and completed 90 minutes for the Blues just days after doing so for the first time in a competitive game on Wednesday night.

Alonso ‘very happy’ for Lavia

Xabi Alonso on his team’s victory over Man U.

“He did a lot of things right. He always connected the defense with the attacking players, he was able to change the game, he made a lot of right decisions, he was very dynamic and competitive,” Alonso said after the game.

“I think not only in this game, but in the last two or three weeks, he’s playing at a very good level and I’m very happy for him.”

Despite proving his fitness since the start of the season, Lavia has essentially been left out of Alonso’s regular first-team squad since Henderson’s fit. It will be a tough decision between them going forward – Lavia has more quality on the ball, but Alonso clearly likes the leadership and intangibles that Henderson brings.

We wonder which team we will see on Sunday.
