York boss Scott Lindsay explains having to substitute Ollie Pearce after just 44 seconds

York City boss Scott Lindsay has explained how Ollie Pearce had to be substituted after just 44 seconds of their EFL Trophy match against Newcastle U21s.

Not only have we seen this happen in this tournament, but also in the National League Cup, which still confuses many fans, but after explanation, it makes sense. But Scott called on the English Football League (EFL) to look into this and possibly make changes.

EFL Trophy Law states that “full available strength” means that EFL clubs must include at least four eligible players among the starting 11 outfield players on their team sheet.

The Match Book states that an Eligible Player is any player who started a game in a previous first-team match (as defined below);

โ€“ The first team game will then begin

โ€“ Among the ten players with the most first-team starts for the club in the same season

โ€“ Made 40 or more starts in first-team fixtures or international equivalents (and not limited to the same club or season)

โ€“ or a standard loan from a Premier League club or any EFL club operating a first-tier academy.

Extended Highlights:

interviewer: “Olly Pearce, we know why, isn’t it ridiculous?”

Scott“Yeah, very, very ridiculous. You know, listen to Ollie training today, we had a collective training today, the boys who are playing with the first team trained with the youth team today and performed really well and then he has to come and do it tonight.

“This is ridiculous. We have to do this because we have to tick all the boxes of the rules.

“But it’s really crazy. It just… I think it actually prevents young players at clubs like ours from performing in actual games, you know what that means?

“It’s like Ben Farrar started off the bench, like he was supposed to start that game.

“I think they are trying to support Premier League clubs rather than clubs at our level. They want Premier League clubs to play against experienced professionals, which is fine and fair, but it doesn’t help our homegrown talent. I think they definitely need to look at the rules of the competition.”

interviewer: โ€œSo I guess they have to be something similar next week or someone different next week?โ€

Scott: “Well, the reason I picked Ollie Pearce is because he lives in York. I’m not even joking because I opened it up to the lads who trained this morning, you don’t have to come tonight because you’ve already trained and it’s a long day for you and then training and then coming to the game, so I didn’t get to where they had to come. I think they all came because I think they thought I was testing them.

“But yeah, we picked Pearce because he lives in York because I don’t want anyone traveling from Sheffield or wherever they live, you know, and, you know, it’s a waste of time to come on and play for 30 seconds. So that’s why.”

interviewer: โ€œI joked that he must be really angry because youโ€™ve screwed up his goals-to-match ratio a little bit.โ€

Scott: “Yeah, I said to him after he had his best performance, so it was a little bit tongue-in-cheek about it. But no, look, he was just, yeah, it’s a ridiculous rule. He said to me, if I get a penalty in the first 30 seconds, can I take it? I said, no, the board is going to come.

“So, yeah, yeah, it’s a crazy rule but we have to do it and I explained it to their manager Robbie and said I don’t want to spoil anything and we’ll do it and he said yes, absolutely no problem. I told the referee before the game too so everyone was on board.”
