Former Man City star Shaun Wright-Phillips says a result against Liverpool this weekend could give his former club the momentum they need to maintain their lead over Arsenal in the next five games.
Enzo Maresca’s side face the Reds, Ipswich (h), Aston Villa (a), Brighton (h) and Nottingham Forest (a) and only Man City News (with permission OLBG), Wright-Phillips said a lot could go into the result at Anfield:
“It is a difficult thing [to predict]. I would like to see them at the head of the table with my bias hat on [after 10 games]. But football is a funny old game. It could be that they beat Liverpool and then they don’t do so well against Ipswich or Leeds, which we’ve seen a lot of big teams do in the past.
“So it will be one game at a time for them and I think the main focus is to beat Liverpool. If they beat Liverpool I think that will set them up for the rest of the games.”
Who will “Arsenal” play in the next five matches?
The reigning champions have an equally tough fixture list with games against the likes of Leeds (h), Nottingham Forest (a), Everton (h), Liverpool (a) and Hull City (h).
Interestingly, both teams have City Ground and away trips Enfield approaches and this will give us a measure of which of the two is stronger.
Liverpool vs Man City team news
Maresca is sweating because of the physical fitness of the two players. Antoine Semenho picked up an ankle injury in the win over Sunderland and was ruled out of international duty with Ghana. Fans will be hoping that the 3-week break will be enough for him to fully recover.
Nico O’Reilly knocked on the door when he was with England. Three Lions boss Thomas Tuchel claimed it was a “minor” problem, but the 21-year-old played in just one of the 4 Nations League qualifiers. Phil Foden was punished. He will play the last match of his three-match ban against Liverpool after receiving a red card in the Manchester derby.
