Jules Kounde has been described as a high-level, team-first defender whose work rate and one-on-one ability meet Liverpool’s need for intensity and defending large spaces.
From everything we’ve seen over the past few years, I’d say Kounde is one of the most respected defenders in European football, not only for his ability but also for his professionalism.
Professionalism and mentality
What do people say about his personality? The overall situation is very positive.
He comes across as very professional, and coaches have consistently praised him for his seriousness in preparation. He also seems humble, rarely seeking the spotlight and usually letting his football do the talking.
The interview also made people feel that he is smart, mature, and interested in things other than football. He has a team-first mentality. You don’t hear a lot of stories about ego or locker room issues.
As for the story of his running training, there have been reports and anecdotes over the years of him choosing to run or bike instead of occasionally drive as part of his fitness regimen. It’s certainly in line with his reputation for discipline, but I wouldn’t say he actually attended every practice.
Work rate and roles
Work rate: 10/10. This may be his biggest selling point. Comte was ruthless.
He regularly overlaps at right-back, stalks runs throughout the game, rarely steals the ball in defence, and has incredible stamina and recovery speed. Barcelona fans often point out that he gets little rest because the coach has so much faith in him.
Quality: Pros and Cons
His strengths are obvious: excellent 1v1 defense, quick passing ability, excellent reading of danger, composure under pressure and the ability to pick up the ball with ease in tight spaces. He can play as either a central defender or a right-back, and his level is very high and he is very stable.
There are also weaknesses. At around 5’11” (1.80 m), he’s not as dominant in the air compared to a giant like Van Dijk. He’s occasionally been caught too high when playing as an attacking full-back, and he’s not the most creative crosser, although he’s improved a lot.
Is he suitable for Liverpool?
Is he a good fit for Andoni Yiola’s Liverpool? I actually think he’s a perfect fit. Everything Iolaura has said since arriving at Liverpool has been around aggressive pressing, intensity, high ball control, energetic defenders and players who can defend large spaces with ease.
These are Kounde’s strengths. If Liverpool want a right-back who can defend first, someone who can plug into a back three, or fill in as a centre-back without sacrificing quality, he would be ideal.
Will Liverpool fans like him? I think he will quickly become a favourite, as Liverpool supporters generally appreciate players who work relentlessly, don’t complain, stay humble and put the team first.
Koounde ticks all these boxes. If Liverpool can sign him for a reasonable fee, I think he will be one of the smartest defensive signings. He’s not as flashy as some defenders, but managers like players they can trust every week.
