Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is joining the ownership group of La Liga side Atletico Madrid.

Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has joined the ownership group of Spanish soccer team Atletico Madrid.

“I am excited to officially join the ownership group of Atletico de Madrid,” Gilgeous-Alexander said in a statement. “It is a club with a long history at the pinnacle of European football and I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of its future.”

The back-to-back NBA MVP joins the La Liga side as an investor and shareholder.

Having won 11 leagues, 10 Royal Cups, 3 UEFA Europa Leagues and 3 UEFA Super Cups, the club is currently in the second place in the La Liga table, 5 points behind the leader “Barcelona”.

Founded in 1903, Atlético de Madrid has featured numerous legendary players including Luis Aragonés, Jan Oblak and Antoine Griezmann among many others.

Gilgeous-Alexander helped the Thunder to the 2024-25 NBA title while also winning the NBA Finals MVP award in that playoff run. He is a four-time All-NBA First Team player and All-Star and led the league in scoring two seasons ago.

He also has a long association with football. In a 2025 Q&A with fans via GQ magazine, Gilgeous-Alexander revealed that the game was the first sport that grew up in Hamilton, Ontario. He has also struck up a friendship with Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior and linked up with him in Spain two years ago.
