The Portland Thorns defeated the North Carolina Courage 1-0 at Providence Park on Thursday to clinch a spot in the 2026 National Women’s Soccer League playoffs for four clubs: themselves, Angel City FC, the Kansas City Current and the Utah Royals.
North Carolina thought they had an early lead in the sixth minute when Ashley Sanchez was sent from behind and fired the ball into the Thorns net, but it was called back for offside and stripped of the league’s single-season scoring record for another weekend. Despite owning most of the Braves, he shot 11-of-13, two-for-seven.
The 20,105 fans in attendance cheered defender Marie Müller’s blocked shot on goal in the 60th minute. From about 20 yards out, Müller fired his shot into the top corner for his third goal of the season and second game winner.
The result secured Portland’s playoff berth for the 10th straight season. Meanwhile, the Utah Royals are off the postseason for the first time in franchise history, Angel City will make its first playoff appearance since 2023 and Kansas City will join the field for the third straight season.
The seeding is still open, but the final spot comes down to Seattle Reign, North Carolina and Denver Summit. The Reign would have been the last team to clinch a spot on Friday night if they had won, but they were held to a 0-0 tie by Utah. If they win over Orlando on decision day, no team can move past eighth. Denver could be eliminated with any result other than a win on Saturday. North Carolina will be rooting for the Pride next weekend as they try to beat Denver.
