This afternoon will see Xabi Alonso hold a press conference ahead of Chelsea’s game against Sunderland on Sunday and we expect some injury updates from him.

The number one question is who will play in goal with Amy Martinez having a full practice this week. But there is also a potential storyline with the injury to winger Geovany Guenda.

Nizaar Kinsella revealed that the summer signing “missed training today and yesterday due to a minor muscle problem”.

Young is “still working to get back” for Sunday’s game.

Guenda runs but overall impresses Alonso

It’s a shame for Quenda, who is clearly impressed with Alonso overall. The fact that he was selected ahead of Estevao to face Tottenham and to face Liverpool was largely seen in the context of the Brazilian’s lack of playing time – we have to admit it was impressive that the Portuguese was lining up minutes there.

His ability to play on both sides and as a full-back (or at least a winger with more defensive duties) is very useful for the Spanish coach given his current set-up.
