After Amy Martinez’s horrific collision with Jarrad Branthwaite against Everton two weeks ago, the focus was on whether he would be OK, and then how Mike Penders would fare in his place.
Until Athletic’s report today, there wasn’t much information on how soon the Argentine could return.
Martinez is trying to make an early return from jaw surgery
Simon Johnson says the goalkeeper plans to “return earlier than planned” after undergoing surgery on a broken jaw.
Martinez himself said he would be “back in a few weeks,” which meant at least a month. But sources “with knowledge of his rehab” told Johnson that he could now “come back sooner than that time frame.”
We still didn’t expect to see him next week, and then there’s an international break. After that, it seems more logical to wait, but Martinez is not that kind of character. Whether he’s smart or not, he’ll try to get back there as soon as he has permission.
It’s almost like he’ll be wearing one of those Abraham Lincoln chin guards.
