Former Tottenham senior scout Brian King has questioned the decision to let Jed Spence join Inter Milan, arguing the transfer fee was too low and the player was too important to lose.
Interviewed by Football InsiderKing has been outspoken about the move to bring the England international to the San Siro this summer.
“I’m still trying to work out why they got rid of Spence. England international. £25m. There were probably other players who moved on from Tottenham before him,” he said. “Spence did well at the World Cup. He became a full-fledged international and I didn’t know it would take that much money to keep him going.”
Spence’s transfer to Inter Milan leaves Tottenham with a weak right-back lineup
Tottenham spent more than £400m over the summer without signing a senior replacement, while a late bid for Neco Williams from Nottingham Forest was rejected.
That has left natural midfielder Archie Gray to fill in at right-back, including in Saturday’s 3-2 home defeat to Aston Villa when he replaced the injured Pedro Porro after 19 minutes.
Roberto De Zerbi insists he is happy with the situation. “We have Archie Gray who prefers to play in midfield but he can also play well as a right-back. I think we are good.”
For Inter Milan, bringing in an England international at such a price is looking increasingly like good business.
