LOS ANGELES — The Chargers are signing wide receiver Max Valdes-Scantling to their practice squad, a source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler on Tuesday.
Valdez-Scantling, 31, spent his first four seasons with the Green Bay Packers and then two with the Kansas City Chiefs. The veteran also played for the Buffalo Bills, New Orleans Saints, San Francisco 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers.
Valdez-Scantling, a 2018 fifth-round pick out of South Florida, was in training camp with the Dallas Cowboys, but the team released him after cutting the roster to 53 players.
Valdez-Scantling’s signing comes after Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals when wide receivers Ladd McConkey (ribs), KeAndre Lambert-Smith (hamstring) and Derius Davis (undisclosed) were injured. The Chargers placed Lambert-Smith on injured reserve on Tuesday, meaning he will miss at least four games.
The Cardinals had no answer for McConkey on Sunday. He caught five passes for 82 yards and looks like he has more to come. But in the third quarter, linebacker Mack Wilson Sr. hit a hard hit as McConkey tried to jump on a breakout route up the middle. McConkey collapsed in apparent pain before leaving the field. He didn’t come back.
Davis was injured on a Justin Herbert interception. Herbert fired a long pass to Davis, who was surrounded by two Cardinals defenders. When Davis tried to scramble for the ball, he landed awkwardly on his shoulder and the ball was intercepted by safety Andrew Wingard. Davis returns to the game.
Also on Tuesday, the Chargers signed wide receiver Gary Jennings from the practice squad to the active roster.
