Stadio Diego Armando Maradona sets the stage for the Serie A match between Napoli and Frosinone. For Massimiliano Allegri, there is very little wrong with Saturday’s clash as his future at the club hangs in the balance.
Despite being in charge of Napoli in the summer, Allegri has already come under intense scrutiny. The former Milan and Juventus manager has overseen just two wins in the first five rounds of Serie A (D1, L2) and the Partenopei faithful are putting pressure on Aurelio De Laurentiis to sack him.
A 1-1 draw with Fiorentina before September’s international break left Napoli six points behind table-toppers Roma, and there is a feeling that another slip-up could be the end of Allegri’s tenure at Napoli. However, it doesn’t look like a simple task for last season’s runners-up as Frosinone enter the city in high spirits.
Returning to Serie A after a two-year absence, Massimiliano Alvini’s men look determined to stay up. After losing 1-0 at home to Juventus on the opening weekend, the visitors hit the ground running (D1) with three wins from their last four league outings, including a 2-0 victory over Como before the break.
As a result, they start this matchday three points clear of their more respectable hosts.
Match preview
Naples
It was a difficult start to the 2026/27 season for Napoli. Adding to their domestic struggles, the Partenopei lost 1-0 at home to Arsenal in their Champions League curtain-raiser as the pressure continues to mount on Allegri, who is on the brink of an unwanted date.
The 59-year-old could have suffered ten league defeats in a calendar year for the first time since 2012, but Napoli’s strong record against newly promoted clubs offers the Italian coach a silver lining. Indeed, they have won their last six league matches against the newcomers, a feat they have only managed twice before.
Another triumph could be on the cards here, not least because Napoli have beaten Frosinone in five of their previous six Serie A meetings (D1). However, they would be wise not to get complacent after failing to win their last two competitive outings against this opposition (D1, L1), including a 2-2 draw in the most recent league clash at this stadium.
Frosinone
Even the most optimistic Frosinone fans could not have expected the Canaries to open the season like they did. Bouncing back quickly from their opening-day defeat to Juventus, Alvini’s charges edged Como, Venezia and Fiorentina as they shared the spoils with Genoa in Marassi.
To make Frosinone’s high-flying Serie A start even more promising, they became the first newly promoted side to hit the 10-point mark after the first five rounds since 2012/13. As if that wasn’t inspiring enough, the visitors’ unbeaten away run in the league now stretches over 12 months (W10, D7).
Another win here would have to come by a long margin, but Frosinone would become the first Serie A side since Juventus in 2007/08 to reach 13 points from the first six matches. They can take more confidence from a stalemate in four consecutive league trips to get their first away win over Napoli in Serie A.
Team News
Italian star Antonio Vergara joins Alisson Santos, Alessandro Buongiorno, Mathias Olivera and Costantino Favasuli on the sidelines and may not be available until November. However, Napoli have welcomed Alex Meret, Leonardo Spinazzola and Scott McTominay, the latter of whom will start on the bench.
On the other hand, Florian Grillitsch remains the most striking player in the Frosinone squad. Free-scoring striker Antonio Raimondo is a doubt after picking up a minor injury during the national break. If Alvini refuses to risk his in-form star, Tomas Bobcek could be in line for his first Serie A start.
Napoli vs Frosinone potential starting lineups
Napoli (3-4-2-1): takes; Marin, Rrahmani, Badiashile; Di Lorenzo, Gilmour, Lobotka, Spinazzola; Neres, De Bruyne; Hojlund.
Frosinone (4-2-3-1): Palmisani; Oyono, Calvani, Monterisi, Bracaglia; Masini, Calo; Ghedjemis, Schmid, Kvernadze; Bobcek.
Napoli vs Frosinone
Frosinone may be out of their depth here, despite being in better shape ahead of Saturday’s kick-off. With key first-team stars back in the line-up, Napoli look poised to bounce back from recent slumps and go level with their solid visitors on ten points.
