Barcelona are keeping a close eye on Lisandro Martinez’s increasingly uncertain situation at Manchester United, with the Catalan club potentially eyeing the Argentina international as an attractive free transfer opportunity in 2027.
Martinez’s future has come under heavy scrutiny after publicly criticizing United’s hierarchy following the Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid.
Although he later held open talks and apologized for the way the situation was handled, doubts about his long-term future have not gone away.
His contract is currently due to expire next summer, although United retain the option to extend it for a further year.
Barcelona are tracking Martinez after agent discussions
According to Sky Sport journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Martinez has discussed his future with his agent amid growing frustration at Old Trafford.
His camp are said to be in contact with potentially interested clubs should a move become possible.
Barcelona is also among those who follow the events closely. The Spanish champions have been familiar with Martinez’s profile for several years and particularly value his qualities as a left-footed centre-back.
If United decide not to extend his contract, Barca can sign him on a free transfer in the summer of 2027.
“Manchester United” is monitoring the situation of the defender

From Barcelona’s point of view, this is the type of opportunity worth pursuing.
Martinez is experienced at the highest level, moves the ball forward with ease and can play aggressively in a high defensive line. These qualities naturally suit Barcelona’s possession-heavy approach.
But it would be premature to describe him as an imminent free agent. The Guardian recently highlighted that Martinez is nearing the end of his current deal, with uncertainty over his future following the public bankruptcy.
Crucially, United still have the option of an additional 12 months. Even if Martinez decides to leave, the club could activate him simply to protect his market value rather than lose the experienced Argentina international for nothing.
This makes Barcelona’s interest more complicated than an outright free transfer.
Still, the fact that his future is being discussed at all shows how quickly things have changed. Once regarded as a cornerstone of United’s defence, the player could now become one of the most intriguing defensive possibilities on Barcelona’s 2027 roster.
