Man Utd 3-2 Roma: Bruno Fernandes on Michael Carrick future after return

Bruno Fernandes says Manchester United players “don’t need to save anyone’s job” after their surprise comeback against Roma in the Champions League.

The Red Devils fought back from 2-0 down in the second half to win 3-2 and end a nine-game winless streak.

Fernandes spoke to the media for the first time since being benched after publicly criticizing manager Michael Carrick’s tactics following their 4-1 loss at Como.

The 32-year-old’s 58th-minute penalty, reinstated to the squad for defeat by Chelsea in the Premier League, sparked an incredible revival to ease some of the pressure on Carrick.

But when asked if the result saved his job, United captain Fernandes told Amazon Prime: “We don’t need to save anybody’s job.”

He continued: “The club needed this win, the players needed this win. We worked hard to come out of this situation together.

“It was difficult, there was a lot of speculation in the media. A lot of things that happened between me and the manager, a lot of lies about us clearing the air, then the manager decided to put me on the bench because I didn’t perform.

“Everyone thought it was a punishment for my words. If it was, it was true. It’s the manager who makes the decisions.

“It doesn’t change my faith in the manager, the staff and every player at this club. It doesn’t change my goal to win every game that comes my way.”
