Man City are seen as “leading contenders” to sign Borussia Dortmund winger Mathis Albert, according to reports.

TEAMtalk Enzo Maresca’s side claim to have tried to sign the 17-year-old during the summer transfer window when they were prepared to pay €20m (£17m) for him.

Dortmund refused to sell Albert at the time, but the player’s contract expires at the end of the season.

The teenager’s limited playing time means he is unlikely to put pen to paper on an extension, suggesting he could be ready to leave Germany next year.

What should Man City fans know about the player?

Albert was born in South Carolina, USA and attended three different academies (Carolina Elite Soccer, San Diego Surf and LA Galaxy) before signing with Dortmund in the summer of 2024.

The forward featured in Borussia Dortmund’s second tier in Germany’s regional leagues last season and it was enough to earn him his first-team debut against Freiburg in April.

Head coach Niko Kovac played Albert in two more games this season against HEBC Hamburg (in the German Cup) and Union Berlin (in the Bundesliga). USA head coach Mauricio Pochettino also gave him his first big games during the last international break. He scored his first goal in the second game against Chile.

Other teams are also interested in Albert

Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain are also considering signing him wingerbut if a few major hurdles can be overcome, City are believed to be the team most likely to beat him.

The first is pretty obvious. If City’s appeal against a breach of Premier League FFP rules is unsuccessful, Albert may be reluctant to move to the Etihad.

Another factor is the age of the American. UK visa rules mean City cannot sign foreign players under the age of 18, so any official approach for Albert will have to wait until his birthday at the end of May.
