Cagliari and Italy forward Daniele Maldini have tested negative for drugs after being involved in a car crash last week, Italian sources said.

Maldini had his driving license confiscated after failing a breathalyzer test, and preliminary reports in Italy suggest he also failed a preliminary test for drug use.

Initial tests were carried out by local police in Milan using saliva swabs, which have no legal validity, but led to police ordering blood samples to be taken at the hospital.

Maldini and the five other people involved in the crash were released from the hospital hours later with no major injuries.

Maldini, 24, has scored three goals in Cagliari’s first five Serie A games of the season and has earned a call-up to the Italian national team for the upcoming Nations League campaign.
