Leeds v Manchester United Premier League Preview

Leeds United will be aiming for a first win in three league games and avoid a painful defeat at Arsenal.

James Justin gave Daniel Farken’s side a second-half lead at the reigning champions last Saturday, only for the Gunners to score twice in nine minutes as Leeds suffered their first top-flight defeat in an encouraging start to the campaign.

“It is still early days [after] just six games,” Farke reflected, hailing Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion as two teams that “did a really good job” and were rewarded with impressive results.

“After 36, it’s a little more important. We’re not far from the glory days, but let’s focus on the here and now.”

Manager Daniel Farke looks to his right and smiles as he wears a black coat at the stadium as head coach of Premier League team Leeds United Football Club

Michael Carrick’s side are three points behind Leeds but their start has looked completely different, winning once in the league and losing 2-0 to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday, with defender Lisandro Martinez adding to his scathing remarks about the club’s spending.

After a five-game winless run in all competitions, Carrick are under pressure but expect a “fantastic game”. “There is a great rivalry and there is a great history between football clubs and territories,” the manager said via United’s website.

“That’s what makes these games special. You have to accept the history and its meaning. You have to accept the past.

“Some games are different, and that’s what makes them special and keeps you hooked. This is definitely one of them.”

Carrick suggested Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo could return from knocks, but Benjamin Sesko said he was “further away” from returning from a calf injury.

Martinez is part of the team. Tom Heaton (abdomen), Noussair Mazraoui (back) and Patrick Dorgu (calf) are also sidelined with long-term knee injury Manuel Ugarte.

Daniel James could return from a back problem for Leeds, but Mateo Joseph has a long-term knee injury and Joe Rodon (hamstring) is out.
