Despite being drawn against the Premier League leaders, Ipswich may see Arsenal’s arrival as a relief as they have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by fourth-tier sides in each of the past two seasons.

The Tractor Boys were beaten at Bromley last season and at AFC Wimbledon in 2024/25, and it’s no surprise that Gary O’Neill is optimistic that the “energy” at Portman Road can inspire his side to overcome those upsets and get their side into the last 16.

“We’re on a different level to Arsenal at the moment but we’ll be stronger on Tuesday,” O’Neill said (via ipswich star), adding that Town “missed the opportunity to capitalize on the atmosphere of a home night” when they lost 2-0 to Liverpool on September 4.

“From a tactical point of view, preparing for the game will be quite simple. Stopping them and stopping what they do is not going to be.”

Ipswich advance to this stage with a 3-1 win over Leicester City in their first game of the season, while Arsenal are making their debut and have won all five of their games in all competitions so far.

The Gunners are six points ahead of Town, who beat Crystal Palace 3-2 thanks to new signing Zian Fleming’s 90th-minute winner, meaning they have six points from four league games.

“We will continue to move forward as a team,” forward Bukayo Saka said (via arsenal website), discussed the depth of their selection after Saturday’s 2-0 win over Sunderland.

“That’s going to give us a lot of strength this season. We need to keep going – it’s not going to stop.”

Ipswich Town v Arsenal: Carabao Cup team news

Ipswich winger Jaden Philokine came on as a second-half substitute for Crystal Palace as he recovers from an ankle injury.

Azor Matusiwa is back in full training after thigh surgery, but midfield teammate Jack Taylor is ruled out with a knee injury.

O’Neill made nine changes from the previous round, giving Abdel Ouattara his debut and bringing on academy prospects Charlie Compton and Tudor Mendel off the bench.

Arsenal are without centre-back William Saliba and there could be problems at right-back as both Ben White and Christian Mosquera are unavailable.

Kepa Arrizabalaga is likely to start in place of first-choice goalkeeper David Raya, while winger prodigy Max Dowman was one of the players selected at this stage of the competition last season.

With both teams facing away league fixtures on Saturday, O’Neill and rival Mikel Arteta are likely to field an equally weak side. On that basis, Arsenal’s form and excellent squad should still give them an advantage.
