Despite being drawn against the Premier League leaders, Ipswich may see Arsenal’s arrival as a relief as they have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by fourth-tier sides in each of the past two seasons.
The Tractor Boys were beaten at Bromley last season and at AFC Wimbledon in 2024/25, and it’s no surprise that Gary O’Neill is optimistic that the “energy” at Portman Road can inspire his side to overcome those upsets and get their side into the last 16.
“We’re on a different level to Arsenal at the moment but we’ll be stronger on Tuesday,” O’Neill said (via ipswich star), adding that Town “missed the opportunity to capitalize on the atmosphere of a home night” when they lost 2-0 to Liverpool on September 4.
“From a tactical point of view, preparing for the game will be quite simple. Stopping them and stopping what they do is not going to be.”
Ipswich advance to this stage with a 3-1 win over Leicester City in their first game of the season, while Arsenal are making their debut and have won all five of their games in all competitions so far.
The Gunners are six points ahead of Town, who beat Crystal Palace 3-2 thanks to new signing Zian Fleming’s 90th-minute winner, meaning they have six points from four league games.
“We will continue to move forward as a team,” forward Bukayo Saka said (via arsenal website), discussed the depth of their selection after Saturday’s 2-0 win over Sunderland.
“That’s going to give us a lot of strength this season. We need to keep going – it’s not going to stop.”
