Gateshead players and Lee Cattermole booed after half-time trailing 6-0 to Southend

Gateshead players and manager Lee Cattermole were booed at half-time after falling 6-0 to Southend United.

The Shrimpers were fiery in the first half, with goals from Harry Cardwell (6′), Kyle McAdam (8′), Harry Cardwell (40′) and a hat-trick from Sam Austin (19′, 42′, 45+2′).

Southend are second in the National League with 20 points from nine games, while Gateshead are bottom of the table with four points.

Lee Cattermole said: “Obviously, it’s an unacceptable result. But for obvious reasons, it’s a very, very difficult situation for the players. So, yes, the atmosphere was difficult.

“So once we were a goal down it was very difficult against a really strong Southend team and their composure was unbelievable. They had seven shots in the first half and six goals. I saw us standing there under pressure against other teams thinking, how can we affect this situation? How can we help the players? But they were very clinical and scored goals very quickly.

“It’s so disappointing but I asked the players at half-time to look after each other and keep playing and they did. There could have been a couple of goals in the second half but it ended up being a very, very difficult afternoon for the club.”

Interviewer: “You mentioned it was a difficult afternoon. What do you think made it difficult? You were obviously very calm when you were talking about the first half at Southend. I guess, you think, what went wrong with you today, for lack of different words?”

plum: “It’s just a very difficult game. For the players, we can accomplish the goal, but not this.

“For me, I’m managing a football club and the book ends with me. I’m trying to make decisions that will improve the club and I believe they will improve the club.”

“This is a professional club and we need to behave like professionals.”

Interviewer: “As for us, where are you going next week and moving on after today?”

plum: “Give the players two days off. I think it’s important for them. They’ve played four games in 10 days. So give them a little bit of a rest.

“Go see the family and come back and we’ve started to reflect on the first nine games. So we’ll proceed as planned.

“Then it’s my job to convince people to come with me every time. I know how difficult that job is in this league. It’s getting stronger and stronger. So my job now is to come up with another wave, come with me next week and then go to Wealdstone and get the results.”

Fans call for Lee Cattermole to be sacked amid growing turmoil within Gateshead squad

Here’s the reaction on social media while Gateshead players and Lee Cattermole were booed after trailing Southend 6-0 at half-time…

@Thomas_w08: Words are meaningless. He has completely lost his fans. The faces of the top executives have said everything. They knew it, and he knew it. Every day he stayed was spent killing time that the new manager could have used to work with his players to turn things around.

@MickScully7: Get to know Gateshead who will sack Cattermole at half-time and announce Lee Clark to replace him in the second half.

@LRbix: Hope the next tweet is a corner flag photo 🙏🙏🙏

@Chris_CA2: If they wanted to, they could bring Rob Elliott back and take away the crap he brought with him.

@teddykrupling: Fair play, you won the second half🙌

@Peterjo05332225: It’s frustrating to concede, but honestly what’s the point of going all out when we’re facing a long season. The first half was won and the game just ended. Be happy with the results and enjoy it

@BenCaplan15: Losing in the second half is unacceptable

@fcfc____: Lost the second half to these bums. Have questions to ask

@JaySouthend:Cancel the fucking season. We couldn’t win both halves of the game.

@callumt84626973:Enjoyed the result, the last thing we wanted was any injuries if we went all out in the second half, the goal conceded in the second half was disappointing but the overall performance was certainly solid and made for 6 happy days. Glad Sam scored a hat trick too💪🏼
