The day’s Premier League result looked set to see Aston Villa beat Tottenham early in the kick-off, extending another winless run for Roberto De Zerbi’s side.
But that was quickly forgotten as Brighton beat champions Arsenal 3-0. After the game, head coach Mikel Arteta tried to explain what went wrong.
Arteta says Arsenal failed to respect fundamentals in heavy defeat
“In football you need to get the basics done, especially in a league where we are still far away from the Premier League,” the Arsenal boss said.
“In the first duel, the second goal, it made the game – especially given the direct nature of the game – very difficult for us.
“The most important thing is that when we regained the ball, especially in our own half, we made a lot of technical errors and we didn’t respect any of the principles of the game that you have to get away from in man-to-man situations, which always put us at a disadvantage and so it was difficult to control the game.”
This feels like a fluke in Arteta’s usually consistent side. Unfortunately for them, this is just a blip they have to endure during the three weeks of international breaks.
