Wagner signs new Huddersfield deal
David Wagner has signed a new three-year deal with the Terriers after leading Huddersfield Town to a surprising escape from relegation last season. Wagner said: “The decision to extend my stay at the club was not difficult. The relationship between Christoph, Andy and myself [chairman] Dean Hoyle, the rest of the board, staff and supporters are all special. We’ve accomplished some incredible things in our two and a half years together and now I’m excited about the future. We still have a lot of work to do in adapting to the Premier League, but this club and its people have the ambition, desire and attitude to rise to the challenge. “
FIFA drops World Cup referees over match-fixing
Saudi Arabian referee Fahad Al-Mirdasi has been removed from the 2018 World Cup refereeing list after being banned from officiating for life by the Saudi Football Federation. Mirdasi allegedly admitted to trying to fix the Copa del Rey final between Al-Ittihad and Feisalli.
Bolt takes another shot at launching a football career
After training spells with Germany’s Borussia Dortmund and South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns, Usain Bolt is now in Norway trying to earn himself a contract with Stromgosset. The 100m world record holder has been trying to launch a football career since retiring from track and field with eight gold medals in hand. The 31-year-old was one of the captains of this year’s Football Aid competition, which took place on June 10.
Egypt brings new hope to Salah
Egypt’s national team doctors met with Mohamed Salah to see if he would be fit for the World Cup after he suffered an injury while playing against Liverpool FC. The Egyptian Football Association later said: “After meeting with Abourida and the national team doctors in Spain today, the Football Association reiterated that Salah’s absence from the World Cup will not exceed three weeks, God willing.”
Lewandowski wants to move
Poland striker Robert Lewandowski wants to leave Bayern Munich this summer, according to his new agent Pini Zahavi. Zahavi confirmed speculation about Lewandowski’s future, saying: “Robert feels that his career needs a change and a new challenge. Bayern’s coach knows this.” The forward once again became the Bundesliga’s top scorer with 29 goals last season.
