Deshaun Watson sends a message to his teammates after Sunday’s loss

In the NFL, leadership is most often tested after a loss. Anyone can be motivated when the wins pile up, but the tone a player sets in the locker room after a rough afternoon can shape how a young team responds. It’s easy to point fingers, harder to take ownership and keep teammates confident. Deshaun Watson took the tougher route after the Browns fell to the New York Jets on Sunday.

He shared a message to his teammates after the defeat.

“Just encouraging, just keep encouraging. We have a young team, especially offensively, but keep encouraging them. “Don’t be arrogant. I will keep testing you. I’ll keep coming back to you, find open zones.” My job is to put them on the ball by giving them opportunities to make plays, and there were some shots that I was probably sitting here thinking about. So we’re all in this together, and if these elements come up again, we’ll continue to work hard to find ways to take advantage of those opportunities next time,” Watson said.

Watson’s message comes after a game in which completions were difficult. He connected on just 15 of 33 attempts, and the few incomplete passes were passes his receivers couldn’t hold on to in the steady rain.

Instead of calling someone, he focused on trust. Promising to keep returning to his receivers is important for an offense that relies heavily on young players. Denzel Boston and KC Concepcion are new players, Isaiah Bond, Harold Fannin Jr. and Quinshon Judkins are in their 2nd season.

These players played a central role in Cleveland’s 3-1 start. Boston leads all rookies in receiving yards, Concepcion became a reliable option before the concussion, and Fannin entered the week with 153 receiving yards. A player who loses faith in this group after one bad day could set the offense back significantly.

Watson also took some of the blame, admitting there were shots he could have placed better. That ownership reflects Todd Monken’s clear appreciation of his performance after the game.

The way he spread the ball around showed confidence in the action. Bond, Boston and Jerry Jeudy each had 7 targets and Watson didn’t stick to a single pick even in tough conditions.

It is only fair that he mentions the elements. The rain made it difficult to handle the ball all afternoon and the Jets weren’t immune either as both teams lost by 2.

Watson’s role as a veteran leader becomes more important by the week. Outside of him, Denzel Ward and Grant Delpit, the starting line-up is made up of mostly young players, and how they respond to their first real setback in weeks will say a lot about this team.

The next chance to answer comes quickly.
