Cowboys hire former Browns head coach

Fired head coaches often rebuild their reputations as coordinators or assistants, and many of them shape the next generation of coaches along the way. Former Browns head coaches have taken these detours a lot. One of them now has a new job in the middle of the 2026 season.

Ari Meirov reports that the Cowboys have hired former Browns coach Mike Petty as their top defensive assistant.

“#Cowboys hired veteran NFL coach Mike Pettine as senior defensive assistant. Pettine gave DC Christian Parker his first NFL job in 2019,” Meirow wrote.

Mike Pettine has one of the longest coaching histories in the league. He started as a high school coach in Pennsylvania before moving to the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens in 2002, where he built his reputation as a defensive mind. He later served as defensive coordinator for the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills.

This success earned him the position of head coach of the Browns in 2014. His first season started with real promise as Cleveland went 7-4 and spent part of November in the AFC North, losing their last 5 games to go 7-9.

The next year was worse. The Browns finished 3-13 in 2015 and Pettine was let go after 2 seasons with a 10-22 record.

He rebounded once he returned to the league. Pettine served as the defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers from 2018 to 2020, spent one season with the Chicago Bears and then spent four years as an assistant coach with the Minnesota Vikings.

Her relationship with Christian Parker explains the move. Pettine gave the Cowboys’ current defensive coordinator his first NFL opportunity in Green Bay in 2019, and Parker now brings his former boss on board to add experience to his staff during the offseason.

For Browns fans, Pettine’s tenure doubles as a cautionary tale. The 2014 team looked like a legitimate contender going on a long run, only to fall apart when the losses started to mount.

The 2026 Browns are in a similar spot. They sit at 3-2 after their first loss in a month and Todd Monken is dealing with injuries to key players Mason Graham, KC Concepcion and Quinshon Judkins as they prepare to visit the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.

Petty’s career shows that one rough job as a head coach doesn’t have to define a coach’s legacy. His time in Cleveland is also a reminder of how quickly a promising starter can run, and Monken will look to make sure his first season in charge ends very differently.
