Michael Carrick takes on an eight-game winless Manchester United side at Stamford Bridge knowing another defeat could cost him his job. Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea are scoring goals for fun, but they have lost more league games than anyone else in the Premier League since March.
Any Chelsea vs Man Utd preview this week starts with the visiting manager, as this lunchtime has rarely carried so much weight for him. Carrick survived nearly 40 hours of talks over his future following last weekend’s 3-0 home defeat to Bournemouth, and the scenes at Old Trafford, covered in our coverage of Carrick’s future and fan protests against the owners, showed just how deep the unrest is now.
“United” is in the 16th place in west London with 7 points after eight games. They are eight matches without a win in all competitions, their worst run since 2015-16 and their worst start to a league season in more than 40 years. A loss or a draw would take it to nine, a streak the club has not suffered since 1988-89.
“Chelsea” is hardly walking. Alonso’s side lost 2-0 at home to Tottenham last weekend, then crashed out of the Carabao Cup on penalties at Anfield on Wednesday, losing centre-back Maxence Lacroix to injury along the way.

Carrick’s last stand at Stamford Bridge
Six months ago, Carrick was the man who saved United. Appointed on a temporary basis in January following the sacking of Ruben Amorim, he guided the club to third place and back into the Champions League and won a permanent deal in May. The contrast with this fall could not be more stark.
United have won just twice in 12 games in all competitions this season, against newly promoted Ipswich Town and Azerbaijan side Sabah. The Bournemouth defeat was the Cherries’ third 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford in four seasons and it came four days after a 4-1 Champions League defeat at Como.
Bruno Fernandes row
The biggest story of the week was the captaincy. After Como, Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned the decision not to press the man and Carrick responded by leaving him on the bench for Bournemouth. United had 63% possession and 16 shots without him, but never looked like scoring.
The pair held open-air talks at Carrington on Tuesday and Carrick has since revealed that the armband is out of the question.
“No decision can be made in this regard”
Michael Carrick asked if Bruno Fernandes will remain as captain
Fernandes, the PFA Player of the Year, is available and expected to return to the starting line-up. Carrick needs creativity: United have scored just ten league goals and Fernandes has three, one behind Bryan Mbeumo.
Chelsea vs Man Utd preview: team news
Both managers are dealing with long injury lists. The left side of the defense is a problem for United. With Luke Shaw and Patrick Dorgu both ruled out, Diogo Dalot is again expected to start at left-back. Kobbie Mainoo returns to practice after missing four games but is unlikely to start.
Chelsea’s biggest hit is Lacroix. The £52million summer signing from Crystal Palace has started every Premier League game this season but tore up his left knee while chasing down Cody Gakpo at Anfield. Alonso confirmed on Friday that he will be out for several weeks and will not return before the international break, while BBC Sport said he could miss around ten games and not return until the new year.
Without Lacroix, Alonso’s options at centre-back are Wesley Fofana, Levi Colville and Josh Acheampong filling in at right-back. Mike Penders continues to score while Martinez recovers.
Alonso’s Chelsea: goals at one end, gaps at the other
Alonso has turned Chelsea into one of the most dangerous attacking sides in the division. Their 17 league goals are the third most in the Premier League behind only Brighton (23) and Manchester City (20) and they surpassed Bournemouth’s five earlier this month.
The problem is on the other side. Chelsea have conceded 15 goals and kept just one clean sheet in the league and have a poor record in the big games. They have lost 11 more Premier League matches than any other club and 14 in all competitions since the start of March, the most of any team in Europe’s top five leagues during that period.
Alonso tried to withdraw from the Carabao Cup, describing it as the “least important competition” for his team. But the pressure is mounting after Spurs won at Stamford Bridge for just the second time in 42 outings.
Head-to-head: United have the upper hand
Despite all their struggles, United won both of their league matches last season and a win on Saturday would make it three in a row against Chelsea for the first time since 1965.
Matheus Cunha scored the only goal at Stamford Bridge in April. Chelsea also have a strange record to overcome: they are the only Premier League team to have played more than one home game on Halloween against Sheffield United in 1992-93 and Liverpool in 2015-16 and lost every game. For a longer look at both clubs, see our Chelsea records and stats and Manchester United records and stats hubs.
The game can be won
Chelsea’s defensive weakness is United’s best hope. As our Premier League London derbies 2026-27 schedule shows, Alonso’s side have lost three of their four London derbies this season and the swapped centre-back pairing could be targeted in transition given the pace of Mbeumo and Cunha.
Carrick could return to a hybrid back three, turning into an out-of-possession back four, allowing United to match the Chelsea man in the draw at Leeds. Alonso, for his part, is likely to push Cole Palmer into pockets between United’s midfield and defence, testing Dalot on the unfamiliar left. If Chelsea score early, a United side so low on confidence may struggle to respond.
What is the threat to Carrick
Carrick is expected to take charge of Roma’s Champions League trip on Tuesday and Aston Villa’s home game next Sunday before the international break. However, speculation about his successor has not subsided. Former Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, who left St James’ Park in July, is the bookies’ favorite with Antonio Conte and Julian Nagelsmann also named.
Alan Shearer is among those who sympathize with the manager, with Howe questioning whether he will get the control he wants at Old Trafford.
“I hope this is not the end for Michael Carrick at Manchester United.”

The captain’s line-up didn’t help as we explored why Bruno Fernandes’ line-up was a distraction that Man Utd couldn’t afford. A positive result will ease the pressure till Tuesday at least. Another defeat would leave United frustratingly in the bottom three of the 2026-27 Premier League table, and Carrick’s position looks more difficult than ever to defend.
