Chelsea’s decline is thought to be less about issues in the dugout and more about growing differences between Maresca and the sporting director over recruitment and control issues.
For me, Chelsea’s chaos didn’t start when Liam Rossignol took over. When Levi Colwell got injured, the seeds were sown and the club’s recruiting priorities began to go against what the manager thought the team needed.
Recruitment and experience requirements
After qualifying for the Champions League and winning two trophies, Maresca appears to feel he has earned the right to have a greater say in recruitment. He asked the sporting director to hire an experienced centre-back who could pass the ball out from the back.
He correctly recognized that no other centre-back could start the game with accuracy and pace, and that without the centre-backs our attack would become lackluster. The athletic director turned him down, which felt like an early warning sign.

Maresca was tactically smart and managed to control the game, but he was clearly excited. Relations with Winstanley and Lawrence soured to the point where they could be seen storming into the dressing room to dig him out after a defeat.
Then there were accusations that he ignored medical advice and overtrained his players, which I now believe was coming from Winstanley and Lawrence. As January approached, Maresca once again called upon the experienced centre-back to shore up problem areas and produced a strong second half of the season, but by then things had turned toxic.

Other clubs are approaching Maresca’s side, which is not unusual as agents are regularly in contact with top players and coaches. The key is that players enjoy playing for him, respect him, feel they have an identity and trust him to deliver on his promises.
But Maresca had had enough of the distractions and attacks. Some of his post-game comments were ominous, and players knew there was a rift and that performance was declining.
Owner’s Choices and Their Consequences
At that point, the bosses made a decision: support Maresca and leave Winstanley and Lawrence, or stay out of it, knowing he would leave because he could no longer work with them. His stock is high, and from that perspective, he’s going to get another top job.
The owners were backed into a corner because the athletic director represented their program. They didn’t want him to leave, but in the end they got their own vision out of it.
With Maresca leaving, Winstanley and Lawrence were faced with the question of who to bring in at short notice. Liam taking over is now history but for me the real issue remains these two and bosses need to take action before things get worse.
