Antonio Puerta Trophy: Aston Villa play Sevilla in a trophy you’ve never heard of

This year’s 15th Antonio Puerta Trophy race is particularly interesting because Aston Villa the first English club to be invited to play for him.

There is an obvious connection between the two clubs.

Villa boss Unai Emery is back to the stadium where he spent one of the most successful spells of his managerial career.

Emery coached Sevilla in 2013-2016 and won the Europa League three times in a row.

Sevilla won 12 of the previous 14 cups, only Granada and Boca Juniors managed to beat them.

The first editions were all Spanish affairs, with Sevilla hosting other La Liga clubs, before teams from outside the country began to be invited.

Boca Juniors were their first overseas opponents in 2016, followed by Roma, Schalke, Independiente del Valle, Al-Ittihad and Al-Qadsiah.

Alejandro Garnacho was among the scorers as Aston Villa scored three goals in 12 minutes in a 3-1 win.

Isaac Romero opened the scoring for Sevilla after the break, but Ross Barkley equalized before Garnacho scored and Max Jenner added a third.

Garnacho started alongside centre-half Taylor Harwood-Bellis, who has made just one start since his £30m summer move from Southampton.

Villa striker Brian Madjo returned from injury as a second-half substitute after scoring on his debut against Paris St-Germain in the Super Cup in August.
