Bruno Fernandes has broken his silence on Cristiano Ronaldo after private talks

Bruno Fernandes has revealed he has spoken to Cristiano Ronaldo following the veteran forward’s dramatic falling out with the Portugal international.

Ronaldo’s future with his country has been thrown into doubt after falling out with manager Jorge Jesus and leaving the Portugal camp.

However, Manchester United midfielder Fernandes urged supporters not to take sides and said Ronaldo, the country’s biggest football icon, was not immune to controversy.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Portugal’s upcoming games, Fernandes addressed the situation with his former Manchester United teammate.

The midfielder confirmed that he has been in contact with Ronaldo, but stressed that the Portuguese players are out of the fray.

“We are completely out of the question, we are aware of what you said and what we saw.

“But I think again that the country should not be divided, people should not take sides and we should live all this as one person.”

Fernandes then delivered a powerful message about Ronaldo’s legacy with Portugal.

“We have to respect and accept all sides, but at the same time, as I said, Chris is and always will be the biggest icon of our national team, our football and also world football.”

The 32-year-old also reiterated the importance of representing Portugal and revealed that despite the Ronaldo controversy, the current squad remains focused on matters on the pitch.

The controversy arose after Jesus left Ronaldo on as an unused substitute during Portugal’s UEFA Nations League campaign in a 2-1 win over Norway.

Ronaldo is said to be unhappy with his role under the Portugal manager, with tensions rising ahead of the 41-year-old’s departure from the national team camp.

Later, an emergency meeting involving Ronaldo, the coaching staff and the Portuguese federation failed to resolve the situation.

Ronaldo later released a statement on social media, saying he would address his side of the story in due course.

This has created considerable uncertainty over his international future and whether he will represent Portugal again during Jesus’ tenure.

Instead of adding to the growing debate, Fernandes tried to defuse the situation.

Whatever happens next between Ronaldo and the Portuguese hierarchy, the Manchester United midfielder believes the controversy should not overshadow his former team-mate’s achievements for his country.
