Amy Martinez suffered a serious head injury in Chelsea’s Premier League win over Everton and could keep him out for some time.
Chelsea goalkeeper Amy Martinez will follow a six-stage “return to action” to see if he can feature against Tottenham after suffering a head injury. Argentine midfielder Jarrad Branthwaite’s collision resulted in his team’s 2-0 win over Everton.
The Premier League match at Hill Dickinson Stadium was interrupted for around 10 minutes in the second half while he was treated on the pitch before being taken to hospital. Asked for an update on his condition, Xabi Alonso said: “All we know is that he left the stadium unconscious.
“He’s currently in the hospital doing backup tests. So we’ll have to wait and I’m sure it won’t be too bad, but we’ll have to wait now.” The collision likely caused Martinez to suffer a concussion, and if so, he will be monitored for 24 hours before beginning a six-step “return to action” process.
The first part is a 48-hour rest period with minimal physical and “cognitive” activities such as working and using screens.
This should be followed by a “phased and gradual return to full daily activities”, according to the FA’s advice. Under this, light football training is allowed, but nothing should be done to “slightly worsen existing symptoms or create new symptoms”.

The following four stages are soccer-specific training, non-contact training, full-contact training and finally full return to play. Players deemed to have concussions have rarely played the next game this season with Nico Gonzalez suffering from the same injury and missing Newcastle United’s next game.
Chelsea host London rivals Tottenham at Stamford Bridge for their next Premier League clash under lights next Saturday.
While there is some uncertainty surrounding Alonso, club captain Reece James will definitely be absent for the game, with him expected to be out for several months after undergoing knee surgery earlier this week.
Alonso at least brought Moises Caicedo back into the line-up with the midfield maestro key as they won 2-0 at Everton. Martinez made some good saves to help see out the win before Mike Penders left prematurely.
It was Pedro Neto’s goal that Chelsea dedicated the three points with the Portuguese international to both goalkeepers.
He said: “In it [Emiliano Martinez’s] honor We needed this. We had a very good game. Amy deserved it. Mike [Penders] he deserved it. We are really happy.”
