A first Bundesliga win of the season for Borussia Moenchengladbach saw American defender Joe Scally put in his best performance yet.
Scully scored his third goal of the season and also had an assist in a 3-2 away win over Stuttgart. The 23-year-old earned the SBI Americans Overseas honorable mention for his two-way display.
After Gladbach conceded an early opening goal, Scally showed great skill and creativity in the box to tie things up before the break. Scully closed out the match, giving Alexander Blessin’s team a lifeline with a back-to-back heel lead.
Shuto Machino put the visitors 2-1 up before Scally linked up with Wael Mohya to give Gladbach a two-goal cushion.
Scully would watch the final 20 minutes from the bench, but despite Stuttgart’s late consolation goal, Gladbach held on to win 3–2. The former NYCFC native made four defensive contributions, won three tackles and completed 90% (9/10) of his passes as Gladbach missed the mark in league play.
After not being part of the US Men’s National Team’s September-October window, Scally will be hoping that a strong run of form this fall can elevate him back into the mix this November.
Here’s a closer look at this week’s top Americans Abroad appearances:
Alex Freeman
Alex Freeman helped start a comeback win for Villarreal on Saturday.
Freeman scored his first goal for the club in a 2-1 away win over Valencia in La Liga. The American defender created two attacking chances, completed 84% of his passes and won seven duels from the left wing position, making his 12th appearance of the season.
He also came off the bench for 30 minutes in the 4-3 UEFA Champions League loss to Liverpool in midweek.
Freeman could be rested in midweek in the Copa Del Rey before La Liga action resumes.
Aidan Morris
Middlesbrough are flying high in the EFL Championship and Aidan Morris is the main reason why.
Morris scored his second goal of the season as Kim Hellberg’s men cruised past Bolton Wanderers 5-1 at home. The former MLS midfielder created four chances and also won all four of his duels in the match as Middlesbrough stayed top of the league table.
Morris is playing very well at the moment and with him getting 90 minutes every week it’s hard to see Middlesbrough going down.
Christian Pulisic
AC Milan bounced back from their midweek European defeat on Sunday and Christian Pulisic was at the forefront of it.
Pulisic scored the first goal of the “Rossoneri” who won a 2:0 victory over “Udinese”. The veteran striker put the finishing touches on Luka Modric’s free-kick and headed into the back of the net.
It marked Pulisic’s second goal of the season and third goal contribution in all competitions.
Weston McKennie
Weston McKenney scored his first goal of the season as Juventus stayed in the top half of the Serie A table.
McKennie scored the Bianconeri’s opening goal in Sunday’s 2-0 away win over Lecce. American midfielder Douglas Luiz headed a free kick into the back of the net to start a two-goal half for the visitors.
McKennie also won three tackles and made two defensive recoveries after going the distance in midweek against Stade Rennais.
