Chelsea’s unbeaten start to the season continued this week as Alyssa Thompson shone in Sunday’s London derby triumph.
Thompson started, provided two assists and recorded 90 minutes as Sonia Bompastor’s side cruised past Tottenham 6-2. The US Women’s National Team midfielder/winger has been named the SBI Americans Overseas Player of the Week after an impressive performance in London.
Lauren James and Matilda Vinberg swapped first-half goals from Stamford Bridge before Thompson helped start a dominant second half from the Blues.
Thompson set up Ellie Carpenter for Chelsea’s go-ahead goal in the 50th minute, racing down the left before setting up a cross for Carpenter to slot home.
James added his second goal of the match and Sjoeke Nusken made it 4-1.
Maika Hamano made it 5-1 after Thompson’s second assist of the afternoon.
Signe Gaupset pulled a consolation goal back for Tottenham, but Carpenter made it 6-2 with his second goal of the day.
Thompson also completed two dribbles, won three tackles and made six defensive recoveries as Chelsea kept close ties with Manchester City in the WSL title race.
Next up for Thompson and Chelsea is a trip to Crystal Palace on October 25 before the UEFA Women’s Champions League resumes with AS Roma.
Here’s a closer look at this week’s top Americans Abroad performances:
Tim Weah
Marseille eventually lifted three points in Ligue 1 on Sunday and Tim Weah was in front of victory.
Weah bagged a pair of assists in Marseille’s 5-2 away win over Angers to propel the club into the top eight of Ligue 1. The veteran full-back/full-back played 90 minutes, won two tackles, made three interceptions and made four saves in the match.
Weah continues to be a regular for Marseille and Sunday’s outing could boost his individual confidence this autumn.
Gio Reyna
Strasbourg failed to pull off an upset against Ligue 1 and UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain, but Gio Reyna produced one of his better performances of the season.
Reyna scored his second league goal in Strasbourg’s 3–1 loss to PSG, finishing as one of the best players for the hosts. The 23-year-old also won three aerial duels, made two clearances and made four defensive recoveries, entering the 90 minutes from the 10th position.
After a positive USMNT window earlier this month, Reyna will be hoping Saturday’s showing leads to bigger things with Strasbourg this fall.
Tyler Adams
Back-to-back starts and wins for Bournemouth saw Tyler Adams impress in midfield.
Adams played 158 minutes in his last two games as Marco Rose’s men beat Sturm Graz 3-0 in UEFA Europa League play before beating Sunderland 2-0 in the Premier League. The 27-year-old was on the pitch in a busy week against Bournemouth, winning five tackles, making six clearances and 12 defensive recoveries.
Adams’ presence is vital for the Cherries, especially with the team in multiple contests.
Tanner Tessmann
Lyon picked up an important three points on Sunday and Tanner Tessmann is to thank.
Tessmann scored Lyon’s winner in a 2-1 Ligue 1 win over Nice. The American midfielder played the full 90 minutes in the match, won six duels, committed one foul and made six clearances.
Tessmann will now aim to carry that performance into Thursday’s Europa League game.
