Americans Abroad: Aidan Morris, Joe Scally both score in important club wins

There were several American players at the club on Friday, with two of them notching goals in key victories.

Aidan Morris scored his second goal of the season as Middlesbrough beat Bolton Wanderers 5-1 in the EFL Championship. Morris continued his impressive season with a strong 90-minute change as Kim Hellberg’s men stayed top of the league table.

Morris needed just 13 minutes to break the deadlock at the Reebok Stadium, netting one of the easiest goals of his career. A strong passing sequence down the right wing eventually saw Amario Cozier-Duberry cross into the box for Morris to slot home.

Will Lankshear doubled Middlesbrough’s lead in the 31st minute and Lewis Brunt’s own goal made it 3-0 in the 40th minute. American midfielder Sebastian Berhalter was instrumental in Middlesbrough’s third goal as his cross was flicked on by Adilson Malanda before curling into the net beyond Brunt.

Theo Bair pulled a goal back for Bolton before half-time, but Middlesbrough eventually regained the upper hand in the second half.

Cozier-Duberry made it 4-1 after 73 minutes before Lankshear added his second goal of the night to seal the final five-goal victory.

Morris finished the night with another 90-minute shift, with Berhalter playing 74 minutes and Max Arfsten coming off the bench for the final 21 minutes.

Middlesbrough close their October schedule at home to Charlton Athletic on Halloween.

Joe Scally delivers a Man of the Match performance in Gladbach’s first league win

Seven Bundesliga matches into the 2026-27 season and Borussia Moenchengladbach are finally off the mark.

Joe Scally scored his third goal of the season in Gladbach’s 3-2 away win over Stuttgart on Friday night. The American defender also provided an assist as Alexander Blessin’s men snapped a six-match league unbeaten run.

Ermedin Demirovic put the home team ahead after just 5 minutes, putting Gladbach in an early hole on the road.

Scully equalized before the break by cleverly directing a backheel to finish Zento Uno’s shot into the bottom corner.

Shuto Machino put the visitors 2-1 ahead six minutes into the second half and Scully beat Wael Mohyen to extend Gladbach’s lead.

Demirovic pulled one back in Stuttgart with seven minutes to go, but Gladbach would hold on for a vital win.

Scully created one chance in the match, won three duels and recorded 70 minutes on the night with four defensive contributions.

Gladbach will return home for their remaining two October matches, starting with a DFB Pokal date with Karlsruher on Tuesday.
