Alvarez strike sees Atletico press Barcelona ahead of Clasico

Julian Alvarez scored his first home goal of the season as Atletico Madrid beat Deportivo La Coruna 1-0 to move Diego Simeone’s men within two points of LaLiga leaders Barcelona.

Alvarez, who forced a move to Barca in the summer, marked the campaign with a goal in the 1-1 Champions League draw at Stuttgart in midweek.

And he followed up that effort with a simple result at the Metropolitano that put the pressure on Barca ahead of Sunday’s Clasico with Real Madrid.

Alvarez headed home Alejandro Grimaldo’s cross three minutes into the second half, his close-range effort proving decisive as Atletico made it eight wins from 10 to start the league season.

Georges Mikautadze won in the 96th minute when “Villarreal” won against its neighbor “Valencia” with a score of 2:1.

Pepelu’s pinpoint penalty gave Valencia the lead, before Villarreal doubled their lead when Cesar Tarrega struck after failing to clear a corner.

However, it was ruled out for offside and Alexander Freeman then equalized by heading in Sergi Cardona’s cross.

The game went in Valencia’s favor as Pape Gueye was sent off for elbowing Jose Gaya.

However, the home side were reduced to 10 men when Harvey Elliott picked up two consecutive yellow cards for dissent and Villarreal claimed the derby at the death as Alberto Moleiro’s excellent cross was collected by Mikautadze to leave Valencia with just six points from 10 games.

“Racing Santander” won “Espanyol” 2:1, “Elche” won “Rayo Vallecano” with a score of 3:0.

“Lazio” climbs to the top, “Roma” remains unbeaten after the thriller

Lazio went top of Serie A with a 2-1 win over Parma as city rivals Roma maintained their unbeaten start with a 3-3 draw at Napoli.

Gustav Isakse’s first-half goal was ruled out for offside for Lazio, but Kenneth Taylor’s effort and Diego Carlos’ own goal were enough to secure the points.

They are three points ahead of reigning champions Inter in the Scudetto race ahead of the Nerazzurri’s clash with Fiorentina on Sunday.

Roma are four points off the pace but, like their arch-rivals, are yet to taste defeat after two come-from-behind draws against Napoli.

Frank Anguissa’s stunning overhead kick put Napoli ahead, before Scott McTominay doubled his lead after nodding home an early header from close range.

But Matias Soule’s fine long-range strike saw Roma pull one back, with Leonardo Balerdi then slotting home the equalizer from point-blank range.

McTominay restored Napoli’s lead with an unerring long-range effort into the bottom left corner, only for Balerdi to head home a second to salvage a point.

Elsewhere, Como defeated Sassuolo 2-0, while Bologna won by the same scoreline at Cagliari.

Dortmund is back on top

“Borussia Dortmund” defeated “Eintracht” 1:0 and rose to the top of the Bundesliga.

Maximilian Beier’s 80th-minute goal secured the points as Dortmund moved three points clear of Bayern Munich ahead of Sunday’s meeting with third-placed Freiburg.

Romulo Cardoso scored twice as RB Leipzig beat Elversberg 4-0, while Niklas Fullkrug’s two penalties helped Werder Bremen beat Mainz 3-2.

Paderborn beat Hamburg 1-0, their victory saw Union Berlin drop to second after a 1-1 draw at Augsburg in which both teams were sent off. Schalke drew 0:0 with Cologne.

In Ligue 1, Paris FC missed out on a chance to go top of the table, at least temporarily, as they were beaten 2-1 by Lens.

Florian Thauvin equalized for Lens after being beaten by Thorgan Hazard before the roles were reversed as the latter fired home from Thauvin’s cross to complete the turnaround.
