Former “Juventus” striker Aldo Serena supported Nick Voltemade.
The Newcastle United loanee has so far been restricted to just 80 minutes off the bench in Serie A matches.
Although Nick Woltemade has scored in both of his Europa League starts, including against Celta Vigo on Thursday.
Aldo Serena now says: “Woltemade convinced me? Half, let me explain. He’s not very fast, but he’s a striker who plays well and suits Spalletti’s game.”
Aldo Serena also played for Inter and AC Milan, he says of Nick Woltemade: “He has good technique and uses it to combine well with his teammates. But he needs to understand better when to play the ball first and when to control it and wait for the midfielder to come in. If you play center forward, you have to keep the ball up, protect it and maybe win a few fouls. I’m still confident he can play up front.”
Aldo Serena talks about Nick Woltemade playing 90+ minutes on Thursday: “It must be said that the Koopmeiners never made a run to back him up, so he didn’t help Woltemade at all.”
Spalletti is now said to be considering strikers Woltemade and Kolo Muani for the first time in a starting line-up against Lazio in Turin on Sunday.
It’s all been hilariously criticized by the Italian media as the Newcastle United loanee has been scapegoated for Juventus’ mediocre start to the season, sixth place in the table and just nine goals for Juve in six league games.
This Nick Woltemade criticism (blindly parroted by the England media) is especially ridiculous because Big Nick hasn’t had a chance to start a Serie A match yet, just 80 minutes in the subs.
The loanee now has two goals from two starts for Juventus in the Europa League.
A big problem was Juventus coach Luciano Spalletti’s reluctance to play alongside strikers Kolo Muani and Nick Woltemade. Before kick-off last night, Spalletti insisted he would/could do it, even from the start of the match against Celta Vigo.
It didn’t happen, but Kolo Muani came off the bench six minutes after Woltemade’s equalizer and the pair played together until the final whistle. They combined well with Nick Woltemade then, and when Kolo Muani finished off the fightback with the winner in extra time, he tied the game gratuitously and it ended perfectly.
Nick Woltemade was a happy man after the final whistle and told the Italian press: “I think it was my best game for Juve. Obviously, I can do better, but I’m happy with the goal, a goal always boosts confidence. It’s important for a striker and I want to keep getting stronger. Of course, I like playing with Kolo. When you have only one center forward, the defenders can only focus on one of the two, and it’s easier for us, but I can’t separate the coach. I don’t have confidence, whatever he does I think the choice will be right, I’m a good player, Kolo is also a good player, so the decision depends on the coach, but as long as we keep scoring goals, everyone will be happy.”
