With several clubs facing relegation, United should focus on quality players who can strengthen key positions next season.
The Premier League relegation battle is intensifying, with Wolves, Burnley, West Ham United, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United all fighting to avoid relegation. Palace could also find themselves embroiled in the mix, especially with the possible departure of Gersh and Glasner’s apparent friction with the hierarchy. Three of these five players are likely to be eliminated, creating a prime opportunity for a club like United to draft quality talent.
Drop zone quality
The amount of potential talent is impressive. Wolves’ Joao Gomez, Andre, Mateusz Mane, Jorgen Strand-Larsen and Hugo Bueno have all attracted attention. Burnley could bring in Maxime Esteve and Lesley Ugochukwu as bright young players. West Ham United have Mateusz Fernandez, Lucas Paqueta, Malik Diouf, Jarrod Bowen and Max Kilman.
Forest’s squad includes Elliot Anderson, Murillo, Morgan Gibbs-White, Dan N’Doye, Omari Hutchinson, Nikola Milenkovich and Neco Williams. Adam Walton, Jean-Philippe Mateta, Maxons Lacroix, Tyreke Mitchell, Ismaila Sarr and Dean Henderson could be available if Palace are stretched thin. Not all players match United’s ambitions, but there is real quality among them and Premier League rivals will be lining up.
Downgrade forecasts and patterns
Wolves and Burnley look certain to lose, while West Ham should have enough quality to get out of the woods. Leeds United appear to be the most vulnerable on paper, although Forest or Palace could easily be the last team to be relegated. Both enjoyed stellar performances last season that raised expectations, but have since experienced behind-the-scenes turmoil between coaches and owners.
Football has a cruel way of creating these stories, with huge highs followed by devastating lows. The possibility of Crystal Palace winning trophies, reaching Europe and then being relegated next season would be a typical football story. The sport loves these dramatic arcs, and whether it’s a palace or a forest feels destined for such a storyline.
Manchester United’s strategic goals
If relegation becomes a reality, several players should be on United’s radar. Joao Gomez, Adam Walton, Elliott Anderson and Mateusz Fernandez are the obvious options to strengthen the midfield. Strand Larsson and Mateta could provide experienced forward alternatives to challenge or rotate with Cesko.
Defensively, Murillo and Esteve provide a left-sided centre-back solution, while Hugo Bueno and Malik Diouf provide astute left-back options. Midfield and forwards remain clear priorities, but center backs also become crucial if Maguire leaves. Given Martinez’s ongoing injury woes, left-backs may be a wiser investment – they are harder to find and Martinez has suffered more than De Ligt.
The left also needs to be addressed. Cunha excels in that area but constantly drifts inside, so having a more natural wing presence allows for greater tactical flexibility. Whether United need a left-back or left-winger will largely depend on how the next manager sees Dolgu’s best position. If he is viewed as a full-back, with Shaw unlikely to leave before the end of his contract and Armas and Leon developing in the youth teams, then the winger will be a priority. However, if Dolgu’s best performances as a forward suggest he can play as a winger, then another left-back will become vital. Shaw’s fitness is unreliable, and if Dolgu moves on and Shaw inevitably gets injured, the youngster may not be ready for regular first-team action.
