The Nigeria National League opens the 2026/27 season today, Sunday November 1 at 4pm. Heartland hosts Crown FC of Ogbomoso at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, a day later on Saturday, October 31.
NNL Chief Operating Officer Danlami Alanana announced the change on October 25. He cited “important state events scheduled for the same day and venue”, apologized to both clubs and their supporters and said the amendment was “in the best interest of a successful start to the new season”.

One match, then wait a week
Only this fixture has moved.
Every other game in Conferences A, B, C and D takes place on the weekend of November 7 and 8, so the entire league effectively kicks off a week from now, with Heartland and Crown FC up first.
Heartland finished third in Conference A last season with 27 points. They won eight, drew three and lost five times. Crown FC was seventh with 16 points.
None were anywhere near the promotional spots.
The winner of each conference was automatically promoted. These four clubs were Inter Lagos, Sporting Lagos, Doma United and Ranchers Bees who are now in the NPFL. Sporting Lagos then won the overall title in the Super 4 round held at the Remo Stadium of Stars in Ikenne from May 4 to 8, their first ever league trophy.
Nigeria football added a detail from the archive. The Dan Anyiam Stadium, with a capacity of approximately 10,000, hosted the first leg of the 2009 CAF Champions League final between Heartland and TP Mazembe on 1 November 2009.
The NPFL schedule has been compiled
The highest flight is still in operation today. His desk is busy. Going into matchday 11, Rivers United, Enugu Rangers and Nasarawa United all have 17 points.
Rivers United lead after 10 games plus 10 goal difference. Rangers are at plus 5. They played eight. Nasarawa United are on plus 3 after 10.
Rivers United host Rangers in Port Harcourt last time out, losing 2-1 to Bendel Insurance, ending their unbeaten start. Rangers, who still have two games to play, return to the league after being eliminated from the CAF Champions League against MC Alger. Nasarawa United, who beat Enyimba 1-0 in the previous round, will play Kano Pillars at the same time where a win there will take them to 20 points and level with whoever wins, Rivers United or Rangers in Port Harcourt, or clear of both if that game is a draw.
Friday and Saturday were quieter.
Niger Tornadoes and Barau FC drew 0-0 in Minna on Friday while Doma United and Ikorodu City drew 2-2 on Saturday.
What it means for Nigerian football
A one-day delay costs little to NNL. The only oddity is the league of 36 clubs where one match is played and the other 34 are waiting a week.
For the NPFL, having three clubs level after 10 rounds means every point scored now counts and Rangers still have games to play.
