Niccolò Tresoldi has made it clear that he is yet to decide whether to represent Italy or Germany at senior international level, but revealed that a final decision may not be made until the summer of 2027.
Tresoldi on the choice of Italy and Germany: “These two countries mean a lot to me”
The 22-year-old Club Brugge forward Tresoldi was born in Cagliari and moved to Germany as a teenager. He has since represented Germany at the U19 and U21 levels.
He has already scored five goals in nine appearances in all competitions during the 2026-27 season, including in the Champions League against Premier League rivals Aston Villa.
There were calls in Italy for the youngster to be included in Mancini’s squad ahead of Nations League games against Belgium, Turkey and France in September and October – with several other dual-citizens called up to fend off interest from other countries, including the likes of Honest Ahano, Edi Cuadio, Isa Doumbia and Mohamed Ali Zoma.
However, Tresoldi was ultimately not selected for Mancini’s squad for the international matches from September to October, but continued to play for the German U21 team for the time being.
Tresoldi confirmed in an interview with Sky Germany that he hopes to continue playing for the German U21 team until the end of this summer’s European Championship. He admits he is still in a “50:50” position on whether he decides to play for Germany or Italy.
“My heart is still 50:50. Both countries mean a lot to me,” Tresoldi told Sky.
“I wear the German jersey with pride. I love being here. I still want to play in the European Cup and after that, we’ll see how it goes.”
